Do you watch Deadliest Catch on the Discovery Channel? I do, and I like it! I believe I started watching with Season 1, but I may have started on Season 2 or 3, although I went back and watched any earlier seasons. I don’t remember for sure. I have always enjoyed the show.
Yesterday was the Season Premier for the last season, Season 13.
I thought it was a good season opener. There were things I did not like at all, though. I guess you gotta have some bad stuff with the good, though, it keeps things interesting.
Jake and Sig
I enjoyed the episode last night. However, a few things kind of pissed me off about it. Number one, way at the top of my list is Jake Anders0n. I used to be a big fan of Jake. When he was working for Sig, he always stepped up and did whatever needed to be done. He was a very hard worker, although from time to time his temper would flare. I still liked him a lot though, and I cheered for him. Now? What a loser. He makes it up to captain and it seems he is so full of himself, his self-importance, it is sickening to me.
First was the incident that his crew took off and went to the spa for some relaxation, no worries that they were supposed to be out on the open seas by that time. Yeah, it is the fault of the crew for doing that, but Jake needs to be a manager! He needs to be checking and seeing where his people are and what they are doing!
Then, they get out on the open seas and Sig agrees to work with Jake for the mutual benefit that can be achieved. Jake runs a string of pots and mostly comes up with ZERO crabs, or very few in the cases where he actually caught something. Sig runs a string right next to Jake, and he is getting 70 or higher, even 100 king crabs in each pot? My God. So, Sig pulls up one of Jake’s pots to check his bait. They used the wrong bait! Jake says “well they are greenhorns”. Dammit. Since they are greenhorns, Jake, or somebody, needs to be checking their work! Jake wasted like 2 days or more catching nothing due to a major mistake by his greenhorn bait crew.
Jake has the largest king crab quota in the entire fleet and he has already been threatened by the owner “if you are not catching crab this year, I will move the quota to a different boat”. What the hell is the guy doing? If I were the owner (Lenny is the guy’s name, I believe), I would fire Jake ASAP. Jake is a real loser and it makes me feel really sad to say that. Kind of just like Josh Harris. Josh was the big Captain of Cornelia Marie, so he didn’t really have to work, right? Well, Jake is going to be just like Josh… off the show and also out of work in my view. I believe that is where he should be!
Seabrooke was back!
Last night there was also an incident where one of the deckhands on a “non-show” boat had a (suspected) heart attack. You know, they often show those life and death situations even that happen on boats that are not part of the show. Well, in this incident, when it was called into the Coast Guard, they said it was on the “Seabrooke”. Hmm.. do you remember the Seabrooke? It used to be part of DC, and that was Captain Junior’s boat! It seemed it was not the captain who had a heart attack, rather a young (31-year-old) deckhand. They never mentioned that Seabrooke was a former DC fleet boat, never mentioned Junior at all. However, my understanding is that Junior retired from fishing anyway, though, because of his terrible back problem. So, they probably have a different captain now, but I was surprised that they did not mention that Seabrooke was a DC boat.
Cleaning up on the Kings
I was very impressed with two veteran Captains last night, though. Sig and Keith. Sig and Keith were the only two guys who were really “on the crab” (well, Jake was on them too, but you gotta use the right bait to catch them, right?). They were on the crab and they were pulling in full pots! I loved it. With the King Crab quotas being quite low this year, and Sig and Keith bringing in full pots, they should hit their quota early this year!
Dry Dock
Jonathan and the Time Bandit were in port for repairs! All of these captains seem to spend huge amounts of money each year to keep their boats floating. You gotta spend money to make money. But, the boatyard people did a terrible job on Jonathan’s rust repairs. Sorry to see that. I like Jonathan, and want to see him out on the water, which seems to be where he will be by the time next week’s episode is on the air.
Good Luck Sean
One Captain that I really felt badly for was Captain Sean on the Brenna A. Sean is a very hard working young man, and I want to see him succeed! But, his quota for King Crab is very low this year! I hope he is able to pick up some quota from somebody to make the season pay off for him. Maybe Jake can send him some quota and Sean will use the right bait! 🙂
Well, great kickoff to Season 13. I am looking forward to next week! How about you?
