I’ve decided to start following the NFL again
I just can’t decide who is my favorite team
I stopped watching NFL football in the late 80s. I even stopped following it altogether. I know nothing about the current players or which teams are good (mostly). I hear about players and teams, but I just don’t follow it at all.
As I recall (it was a long time ago), I think that I stopped watching NFL due to continual strikes by the players, and it just didn’t seem “fun” anymore. So, I moved on to things that interested me more.
Another factor in my loss of interest in the NFL game was because I got married in 1990, and it was more important to me to spend time doing things with my wife.
In recent years, the NFL has become so political too. We live in a time when politics is so stressful and it is constantly in our faces. I just didn’t feel like coming back to watching the game because it was more politics.
I’ve been following College Football
However, even though I totally lost interest in the NFL, I still continued to follow college football.
I went to college at LSU back in the early 80s and enjoyed going to the football games. I continued following LSU football over the years. When I moved to the Philippines in 2000, I stopped following LSU or any other college football. It was not because I lost interest, it was because in those early days of my Philippine life there was no way to watch or even listen to the games. It simply was not covered there.
Maybe 6 or 7 years ago, though, the Internet in the Philippines started getting faster and more reliable. At least I could listen to audio streams of LSU games. I could also watch a live televised stream from time to time, although not often. So, I started listening or watching the LSU game every week, and I was enjoying it. I had never heard of any of the players, but I enjoyed getting to know the team. They were fairly good over this time, but not great.
This year, LSU football is great
When the football season started this year, I tuned in to my first LSU game of the year, my first time to watch them while living back in the States. It was great! I could not believe this new quarterback, Joe Burrow. Joe played last year, but more in a supporting role, but a smaller role than he is in now. Also, the fact that I was abroad and could not watch, I knew little about Joe Burrow.
Every game I watched this year, Joe Burrow was super. LSU had always been more of a defensive team, and not much of an explosive offense. This year. the defense was not as good as the offense, but LSU kept putting up so many points. They were a passing team, with Joe Burrow on fire. The run had always been the biggest part of the LSU offense.
Thinking of watching the NFL again
A week or so ago, I was thinking that I am enjoying watching college football so much (not just LSU, but mostly), maybe I should start following the NFL again. In my younger days, I was always a fan of the Rams. But, really I know nothing about any NFL teams anymore and have no real interest in the Rams. What team should I become a fan of?
I was thinking of the Seahawks since I used to live in Washington, but they are just not calling out to me. I also thought about the Saints. I lived in Louisiana. But, again, I just didn’t feel any passion for the Saints.
Who should I follow?
I’m going to follow Joe
It is quite likely that Joe Burrow will be the #1 draft pick in 2020. At this point, the number 1 draft pick will go to the Cincinnati Bengals. Trades could be made involving the #1 draft pick, so it could change. But, most experts think that Burrow will be #1. Burrow is also the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy. It is all very exciting. LSU has the possibility of:
- SEC Championship (to will be decided this Saturday)
- National Championship
- Heisman Trophy Winner
- #1 NFL Draft Pick
In my opinion, Joe Burrow is the majority of the reason for these things. Of course, it is a team effort, and I also give great credit to Coach Ed Orgeron. But, without Joe, none of this would have been possible.
So, I have decided that I am going to start watching some NFL football but will wait for next year to start. What will be my team? As I said, I’m gonna follow Joe. Joe Burrow. Whichever team drafts Joe Burrow, that will be my favorite team.
Why?
Joe is inspirational. He has a great back story. I want to watch as he develops. So, maybe I’ll be a fan of the worst team in the NFL. That’s OK because I’m a big fan of Joe.

I suggest you check out the Seahawks a little closer. Look beyond the players and look at the team philosophy coach Pete Carroll has instilled. That philosophy has created a great work ethic on the entire team. Not to mention they have Russell Wilson… Note that Seahawks and Rams are in the same division, so there is some rivalry there. You can watch them both on Sunday Night Football coming up on Dec 8. Go Hawks!!

Hi Jeff. I suspected I might be hearing from you on this article. LoL. I know you are a big Seahawks fan. I have to say, though, I really love Joe Burrow, and I want to watch him develop in the NFL. I like everything about the guy, his play on the field, the person he is, etc. Hey, maybe Joe will end up playing for Seattle! LoL, doubtful, though.

Bob, I decided to start following the Saints this year, as I’ll be moving to Orange Beach, AL on the Gulf Coast this spring. I suppose because of the proximity to New Orleans, I’ll be in “Who Dat Nation” country big time. One of my favorite little restaurants in Orange Beach is called Bon Temps Po Boys and Specialty Meats, so I’m thinking I’ll fit right in (and BTW, the Saints are doing pretty good too!)

Hi George, nice to hear from you! Good luck on your move. So, moving to Alabama? Are you going to become a Tide fan? I don’t know if I can keep talking to you if so. LoL. Just joking.
Yeah, I hear that the Saints are doing well this year, although I am still not really following the NFL game. 🙂

Joe is an awesome player and I wouldn’t bet against him getting the Heisman. I’ll be interested in seeing where he goes in the NFL draft. I know the Saints aren’t a possibility, but I hope he ends up with a team that you’ll like.
I haven’t followed the NFL for a while either, not because of Kaepernick necessarily (I lost interest long before that). But the Saints are certainly a different team from the old New Orleans “Ain’ts”, or even the Saints from the Archie Manning days. There definitely seems to be an electricity in the air with these guys. So I reckon I’ve found my team. And I may be a little late with this (I’m old and can’t remember if I’ve already said it) but welcome back!
Bob Martin
Hi George. I will personally be very surprised if Joe doesn’t get the Heisman, he deserves it. Joe is indeed a great player and seems to be a nice person as well.
So many people have told me “welcome back” or “welcome home” and I appreciate that very much. Thank you!

Unfortunate for Joe he will probably get drafted by the Bengals. Their owner is an idiot as is always drafting, and ruining, college flash that never pans out in the NFL because their supporting cast is so crappy.
I’ve been a lifelong Bengals fan and the only way I can stay interested in NFL is betting against them.
I too have turned my viewership to college football. Watching a washup, half white aging QB become the delusional Reincarnation of Malcolm X sickened me.
I don’t know about you guys but I remember a lot of class mates in college that were aspiring actors or had an athletic scholarship. Both classes were the last people I’d ever take any political advice from.

Hi Chaz – I don’t consider it unfortunate for Joe to to to the Bengals. I have been in positions several times in my life where I intentionally pursued and got the worst job in an organization. I turned it around, and made a name for myself, leading to great jobs down the road. Yeah, it will be challenging for Joe on those terms, but I think Joe is an impact player, and he can reap the rewards of his hard work. 🙂
