As I mentioned in my article the other day, I recently hired RC to be my assistant, and help me with some tasks that take a lot of my time. I also mentioned that I have high expectations for her, and I hope that she can move up to what I expect.
My expectations are high because of something that I experienced in the past. Back around 2001 or 2002, I hired a young college student named Gladys. Gladys was very shy and quiet, but I could see something in her and I knew that she could be a great employee.
After Gladys finished college she moved to Davao City where I had also relocated. Gladys wanted to come and work for me again. I was very happy because I knew that Gladys could do great things. And, she did.
I am kind of a serial entrepreneur, I have a lot of small businesses. Within just a couple of years after Gladys returned to working for me she was the manager of every business that I had. She did a great job, and I felt very lucky to have Gladys working for me. I taught Gladys a lot, she doesn’t know that she also taught me a lot. I had been in management for years, but Gladys helped teach me how to be a good manager. Also how to be a good teacher. When Gladys was working for me, I experienced great success. Both financially and personally. My businesses were making a lot of money, and I felt very fulfilled in my work. Gladys had a lot to do with that. In addition to being a great employee, Gladys was like a daughter to me.
Gladys left her job when she married a good man who lived in the United States. I was very sad to see her go, but I was also happy that she was moving on to what should be a good life in the United States. And, I can say that Gladys has been very successful in her life there in the USA. She is successful both in terms of family and also business. I miss Gladys.
Last week when my wife, Feyma, and I interviewed RC, we both said to each other that she reminded us of Gladys. I had never thought this of anybody else, and because of this, my expectations are very high. That might not be fair, because no two people are the same. I am really looking forward, though, to seeing how RC does and hoping that she will take the reins and run with it. I want to see her experience the same kind of success that I saw from Gladys.
Not only am I looking forward to watching how RC develops, I am also looking forward to seeing development in myself. Back when Gladys was working for me, I was more of a manager. I managed Gladys, and she managed the rest of my crew. She did a great job. I had a lot of time to think, come up with new ideas, new products, and implement those new things. In recent years I have not really had much time to do those kinds of things. That was the main reason that I hired RC so that I could concentrate on product development. After making the decision to hire her, I thought more about it, and realized that in addition to product development, I would be moving back into the managerial role, and that is something I’m looking forward to, and want to develop more and regain skills that I used to have. I think it will be very effective in my business, and I hope that I am able to make the shift effectively.
We shall see how it goes, but it is indeed an exciting time for me. I will keep you posted.
